Quick guide to paid leave across some European countries

Do you ever wonder, how many holidays are we entitled to or how many holidays should we give employees according to the statutory minimum of their home country in Europe? This guide provides a concise overview of the legal minimum paid leave entitlements for full-time employees in several European countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic, as of 2024. These figures represent the mandatory leave based on working days, excluding public holidays. It’s worth noting that offering additional leave can enhance employee satisfaction and retention.

United Kingdom

  • Entitlement: 28 days
  • Details: 5.6 weeks based on a 5-day work week.

The Netherlands

  • Entitlement: 20 days
  • Details: Minimum of 4 times the weekly working hours (e.g., 40 hours/week = 160 hours = 20 days).

Germany

  • Entitlement: 20 days (or 24 days for 6-day work week)
  • Details: Set by the Bundesurlaubsgesetz; applies to a regular work week.

France

  • Entitlement: 30 days
  • Details: 2.5 days per month worked translates to 5 weeks, but Saturday is counted as a working day.

Italy

  • Entitlement: 22-26 days
  • Details: Dependent on collective agreements; no less than 4 weeks.

Spain

  • Entitlement: 22 or 23 days
  • Details: 30 calendar days, which equates to 22 or 23 working days.

Poland

  • Entitlement: 20 or 26 days
  • Details: 20 days for employees with less than 10 years of experience, 26 days for those with 10+ years.

Czech Republic

  • Entitlement: 20 or 25 days
  • Details: 20 days for private sector employees; 25 days for public sector, teachers entitled to 8 weeks.

Additional Notes:

  • Many countries have provisions for collective bargaining agreements, which can supplement or enhance these statutory entitlements.
  • Employers often find that providing more paid leave can be attractive to employees and may enhance retention.
