Our typical Dutch engineering brief is a Series B or Series C SaaS company hiring its first VP Engineering or Head of Platform out of Amsterdam, a US scale-up landing a Director of Engineering EMEA, an Eindhoven semiconductor or photonics business appointing a senior systems architect or Engineering Manager, or a Dutch enterprise group quietly upgrading a Head of Engineering or CTO position. We do not staff bulk junior engineering roles; our remit is the senior individual contributor and engineering leadership end of the market.
What separates a Dutch engineering search from a generic European search is the calibration. The senior Dutch IC and engineering leadership pool is small enough that the same names recur across shortlists, and candidates are notoriously cautious about being approached by a recruiter who cannot speak credibly to the actual engineering problem. We brief every search with the hiring manager (CTO, VP Engineering, founder) for at least 90 minutes before sourcing begins.

The Dutch senior engineering market in 2026
Amsterdam concentrates senior engineering talent across SaaS, fintech, AdTech, marketplace and platform businesses. The pool here is heavily English-native at IC level, fluent in distributed-team workflows and unusually mobile between Series B and Series D scale-ups. Utrecht has matured into a real second hub for B2B SaaS and fintech engineering leadership, with a real cost-of-living advantage over Amsterdam at Director and VP level.
Eindhoven and the Brainport region operate to a different tempo. The senior engineering pool here is deeply technical, less mobile and concentrated in semiconductor equipment, photonics, automotive systems, medical imaging and high-tech manufacturing. ASML, Philips, NXP, VDL, Signify and the wider Brainport ecosystem produce senior engineering leaders with rare-to-find systems backgrounds. Hiring here rewards written, content-rich outreach over generic LinkedIn messaging.
On the demand side, senior individual contributor (Staff, Principal) supply has tightened sharply over the last 36 months as US scale-ups have built out Amsterdam engineering hubs and as Dutch platform companies have grown into established players. Engineering Manager and Head of Engineering supply is healthier but increasingly competitive on equity rather than base salary.

The very best Staff and Principal Engineers regularly negotiate close to Director-level base salaries on technical ladders, particularly in AI, infrastructure and platform domains.

Dutch engineering comp tracks 10 to 20 percent below equivalent London packages and ahead of Berlin or Munich on average for senior IC roles. The 30 percent ruling closes much of the remaining gap with London on a net-of-tax basis. Figures below are total cash ranges actually offered and accepted on Amsterdam-based engineering mandates over the last 18 months. Eindhoven semiconductor and photonics roles often sit on bespoke ranges driven by domain rarity rather than published benchmarks.

IP, non-compete clauses and the Highly Skilled Migrant route
Three engineering-specific mechanics complicate Dutch senior offers. First, IP assignment. Dutch employment contracts assign work-product IP to the employer by default but personal-time IP is materially more protected than under standard US contracts. We brief every senior IC candidate on the realistic IP boundary before signing.
Second, non-compete clauses. Dutch courts enforce non-competes only narrowly and require a written, role-specific clause to be valid. Boilerplate non-competes inherited from US templates are routinely struck down. We coordinate with employment counsel on the wording before the offer goes out so that the clause survives a court test if it ever needs to.
Third, the Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant) route plus the 30 percent ruling. For non-EU senior engineers, processing typically takes two to four weeks once the sponsor file is complete. The 30 percent ruling reduces taxable salary for the first five years of Dutch employment for qualifying hires recruited from outside the country. Combined, these are often the deciding factor in close races for relocating senior engineering candidates.
